Finish percent worksheet for tomorrow (you are all almost finished). Study for science test tomorrow, remember you have to write a brainstorm about space and another extreme environment of your choice.
 
 
Science -A Reminder that the International Space Station Projects that we have been working on over the past month are due this Thursday.  The majority of students are creating large posters or producing a prezi or power point.

Math -Finish page 174 #3-5 for tomorrow
 
 
Math - Complete exercises 1-5 on pg. 293 of the Math textbook for tomorrow. We are now working on working with improper fractions and mixed numbers for tomorrow.

Science - We are working on a research project about the International Space Station. Students should be working towards having their project finished on Feb 28th.
 
 
Math -Finish first of the three fraction worksheets (the one with the ants on it). We will work on the others tomorrow.  Practice your multiplication tables and determining factors, they are an important part of working with fractions!

Yikes! This is definitely a challenge for me keeping this blog updated everyday! :)  I will try my best as we move into even more and exciting units this term, a New Year's resolution of sorts. Perhaps I need to enlist some students to help me with this task. Any takers?

An update for parents, in case your students have kept "mum" about our new learning units. In science we have started our exploration of Extreme Environments. This is an exciting unit where we get to take a look at a variety of extreme environments and consider the challenges that scientists, and adventurers, face when exploring them. Examples of extreme environments we will be looking at include: Polar regions, High Mountain Areas, Deep Oceans, Deserts, Space, Volcanoes...  So far we have begun defining the terms: Extreme Environment and Technology. We have also started to consider what factors make each environment extreme and the technologies that can be used to aid survival and exploration in each environment. 

Since our return from Winter Break we have also started a new unit in Math. Fractions, fractions, fractions! Doesn't everyone just love fractions??? I do, I love how concrete/visual they can be!  We have so far reviewed the definition of a fraction and have been using a variety of models to help us understand the relationships between key benchmark fractions. This week we have also been reviewing the concept of equivalent fractions. One way that parents can provide support during this unit is to encourage their kids to spot the wide variety of examples of fractions that exist in our everyday lives. Ask your son or daughter to tell you about some of the examples that they might have seen in an introductory slide show to help get the conversation started. 
 
 
Math: Draw a simple picture on the grid paper provided. Determine the coordinate points and write instructions so one of your peers can reproduce the image. This is due tomorrow.

Science: Collect all of the materials you need to put together your circuit project and bring them to school. Your science periods on Thursday will be time for you to start put your project together. 
 
 
Math
-Point plotting (on a coordinate grid) worksheet needs to be completed for tomorrow. This is an activity where students plot points on a graph and then connect the dots to create an image.

Science
-ALL students should be talking with their families about their circuit projects.  Students have been encouraged to recycle parts for their projects from items that are no longer needed or wanted.  This project should not be costly for families. I have lots of paper clips for wires here at school and "D" sized batteries are available for students to use as well.  The purpose of the project is to get students seeing and understanding that circuits exist all around us and to think of a possible way in which a circuit (series or parallel) can be used to for a specific purpose. I haven't set too many parameters for this project as I want students to be able to be somewhat creative.  The two parameters that I am giving them is that their project needs to include a switch and the circuit must work. If for some reason a student is not including a switch they need to come and discuss it with me as to why. Some ideas for students that are still unsure what to do: robot, morse code machine, operation type game, question and answer game, flashlight (homemade).  Components that can be used include: lights, buzzers, and motors. The due date for this project is Dec 19th.
